The majority of poker games and variants use a regular deck containing 52-cards, which are made up of 13 clubs, 13 diamonds, 13 spades and 13 hearts. The cards, ranked from lowest to highest, are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. In a few poker variants, the Ace can be 'wild' which means it can also be valued as 1, much like in blackjack.
At the start of each hand, every player must 'ante up'. This means each player pays a small amount to be included in that hand and ensures, should everyone fold, that there is always something in the pot to be won. Next, the dealer deals each player the number of cards according to poker being played, called a 'hand'.
Moving clockwise, each player may bet or pass (check). Should the first player check, then the next player can fold, check or bet. If, however, he bets, then the next player can fold, call or raise. Once the first bet has been made, none of the players can check in that round. If a player 'folds', then he throws in his cards and sits out for the rest of the hand.
When a player 'calls', he matches the bet made by the player before him. If a player 'raises', he increases the bet made by the player before him. Re-raising is when a player raises a raise. Betting ceases if all players fold, except one who wins the pot.
If all the players have 'called' the last bet, all the cards are shown and the player with the highest-ranking hand wins the pot. It is normally good poker etiquette for the player who made the last bet or raise to show is or her hand first.
